In 1877 the Reverend Ben Chambers of St Domingo Chapel in Liverpool founded a cricket team to keep the young men in the area away from the perils of alcohol. To keep the men fit during the winter months, he encouraged them to play football. Following this first winter season of training, the St Domingo Football Team was formed. Over a period of time all the best players from other local church teams came to play for St Domingos and in 1879 the team was renamed after the area rather than the original founding chapel.
