A false 9 is a deep-lying striker who operates between where a traditional centre forward and a playmaker number 10 would usually play. Lining up as a standard forward, this player will be a nightmare for the opposition defenders. They will pull players one way then another, away from the ball and towards it, but always out of position.
In recent years players such as Messi, Firminho, Totti and Bergkamp have excelled in this position, which requires tactical thinking, high technical ability and an eye for an amazing pass. Not everyone can be a false nine!
